Finham Lions Vs Rugby Town Boys
After nine months the 2008/09 season came to an end with an away trip to Finham Lions. Town Boys had beat Finham Lions three weeks ago at Kilsby Lane and were looking to secure another 3 points. The squad for the final fixture was Ben Townsend, Eddie Pinks, Dane Williams, Rhys Headland, Oli Lamb, Conor Macleod, George Hole, Javier Jerez, Curtis Banton, Jamie Fox, Ryan Nutchey, Callum Jordan. Unfortunately for Town leading scorer Sam Addison was away on international cheerleading business!
No sooner had we arrived at Finham’s pitch and the heavens opened. Heavy rain was to continue for much of the game but both sides were looking to play the ball on the deck as much as they could. Town were looking good in their approach play and defending well but despite creating some good chances could not get the ball into the net. During the course of the half Finham had some chances of their own but they either went wide or were dealt with by Ben Townsend in the Town goal. All too soon half time came and Town had nothing to show for what was a good creative half. H/T 0-0.
Town should have been comfortably in front at half time but with the scores level Finham knew they were still in the game. Town made one change at half time and were sent out with clear instructions to get their passing back to basics and stop over complicating moves. Half way through the second period the scores were still level and Town had created and missed several more good chances. The Finham keeper was also in good form pulling off several good saves. However, the deadlock was broken when Conor Macleod breezed into the box and unleashed a great shot into the back of the net. This was just the boost Town needed and they went further in front when Jamie Fox was on hand to slot home. Town were dominating possession now and this led to Jamie Fox getting his second goal of the game and a slide celebration! With a comfortable lead established Ben Townsend swapped positions with Ryan Nutchey with a view to getting Ben on the score sheet. As things worked out it was one of Town’s other players who had not scored this year Eddie Pinks who got Town’s next goal. This triggered jubilant celebrations amongst the team and an exhibition of some rather fetching superman pants from Ed!! Eddie has been close on a couple of occasions recently and it was great to see him score today. As the rain eased up and the sun began to come out the game came to an end with Town winning 4-0.
I think we deserved the win today having played the better football for the most part. In difficult conditions with the ball zipping off the wet surface you did well to keep your passing game going. The movement you showed got you into some good goal scoring chances and although it took a while to get one in the back of the net you quickly got another three to wrap up the game. This has been a mixed season results wise for us with points dropped against sides we should really beat. On a more positive note we have taken points off all the sides that have finished above us in the league. In all competitions this season you have scored an impressive 94 goals. In terms of personal development, each one of you has improved areas of your game during the course of the season, which is good to see and watch. It’s been a pleasure working with you again this year and well done for sticking together as a team and playing some great football along the way. You did us proud.
