RTJFC U12 Boys - 9-a-side Tournament Winners

So yesterday was the day all the hard work paid off and Rugby Town U12 Boys finally achieved what we all new they were capable of by winning their own 9-a-side Tournament.

The boys started slow which seems to be how they always start tournaments, with the first group game ending in a 1-0 loss against Daventry Town.

A slight change in formation to suit the festival 9-a-side rule of no offside and the boys got into their stride with a 4-1 win in the next game against Withymoor colts.

Needing to win their last game to secure runner up spot in the group the Boys were always comfortable, now playing with confidence eased past Athletic Utd 3-0 and secured a semi final place against Rugby Town Colts.

So a home derby for the semi final against an improving Colts team meant a Rugby Town team would be in the final. There was a bit of an edge to the game and neither team could break the deadlock in the early stages of the game. However it was Rugby Town Boys who took the lead and from that position never looked in Danger and a second goal soon came. The semi final finished 2-0 and credit to Rugby Town Colts for a great effort in all the games they played.

So our first final and against Barrow Town, a team we had a bit of knowledge about having seen them in action in their own tournament a few seasons ago.

We knew it would be our hardest game of the day so fitting that it was the final. Both teams started well and you could soon tell it was going to be close, Rugby started the better and had chances to take the lead, however Barrow were awarded a penalty which seemed harsh and Jake was given no chance from the spot and the Boys were 1-0 against the run of play.

At half time I told the Boys not to get their heads down if we go a goal behind and thankfully they didn't. The equaliser soon followed and it was game on, both sides had chances to take the lead but neither team could find a way through and extra time soon was upon us. It was only 5 mins and the Boys were looking stronger and they did everything but score with shots just going agonisingly wide. So the final would be decided on the dreaded penalties, the Boys were up first and Lewis put us 1-0 up. Barrow hit the bar with their first penalty to give us the advantage. Archie scored his and Barrow scored their second. Luke was next and slotted his home for 3 in row to put the pressure on Barrow. Jake made a great save from Barrows 3rd penalty which meant Rees just needed to score for us to win and he obliged.

The boys were ecstatic and all piled on top of Rees in celebration.

Our first trophy and tournament win and I couldn't be more prouder of the team and all the players.

It was nerve racking at the end but elation when the winning penalty was scored.

Thanks to all the parents and friends for all your support today and to Carl Pountney for his help and assistance.

Well done Rugby Town U12 Boys!!!!
